Battle of Monmouth Reenactment
June 22nd and 23rd, 2019
Old Tennent Church was present during the reenactment of the 241st anniversary of the Battle of Monmouth. Many people came by to say hello, marvel at our model and had long talks with us. There was so much interest in our church and what we do. Many of the visitors had no idea that we are a working and active church. We hope to see many of you at our next service soon!
Fought on June 28th, 1778, this was a decisive battle for the Patriots. The Americans, commanded by Washington himself, dominated the field in scorching heat, and held General Clinton back taking a defensive position. When the battle first began, it looked grim as Major General Lee botched an assault and fell back and lost control of the army. Washington had to take charge, the British retreated, and the Americans regained control of New Jersey and Philadelphia.
Legend has it that Lee was later court-martialed by Washington in a tavern near by. Washington had him arrested on charges of disobeying orders, conducting an "unnecessary, disorderly, and shameful retreat" and disrespect towards the commander-in-chief.
During the battle, Old Tennent Church served as hospital. Many of the soldiers - American and British alike - are buried in our cemetery.
We had a scaled model of our church on display with other items available for purchase. Thank you to all who stopped by!
